Home' micenet eMag : micenet AUSTRALIA December 2014 January 2015 Contents This first stage of the extension includes an additional 4300
square metres of multipurpose convention floor space,
associated pre-function spaces, and multiple meeting spaces
with future delegates and guests to enjoy expansive views across
the River Torrens. A 600-seat ballroom offers stunning river views.
Adelaide Convention Centre chief executive, Alec Gilbert, said
the redevelopment will again position South Australia as a leader in
the international convention market by providing one of the
largest, most flexible and up-to-date meeting places in the world
and removing existing capacity constraints.
“Among the new events already secured for the expanded
centre are the Australian and New Zealand College of
Anaesthetists 2015 Annual Scientific Meeting and the Australian
Gastroenterological Society’s 2016 annual meeting, both of which
will attract over 1000 delegates,” Mr Gilbert said.
The second stage of the redevelopment, on the eastern side of
the centre, replaces the existing plenary building (home of the
original centre in 1987) with a multi-purpose, state-of-the-art
facility with plenary capacity of up to 3500 seats. This stage is
scheduled for completion in June 2017.
The full result of the expansion project will be three individually
iconic buildings, with dedicated arrival points and distinct
identities. These three standalone venues flow seamlessly
internally to operate as a single, unified facility hosting one single
major event, or three separate events concurrently.
The Adelaide Convention Centre redevelopment, along with
other work being done along the Riverbank precinct in close
proximity to where the centre is located, is making Adelaide a
more appealing conference and convention destination. m

Client satisfaction the
key for `World’s Best’
The Cairns Convention Centre team is celebrating the end
of an outstanding year dominated by high profile events
and client satisfaction, the highlight being awarded the
AIPC APEX Award for World’s Best Congress Centre.
Made biannually through a comprehensive analysis of
centre performance based on customer satisfaction surveys
the results showed the Cairns Convention Centre was well
above the measured benchmark in every category.
The past year has been a strong one all ‘round for the
centre. In May it hosted the 2014 Australian Tourism
Exchange (ATE), billed by many as the ‘Best ATE in its 35
year history’. It required doubling the footprint of the
existing building and providing extended services to the
temporary structure. Tourism and Events Queensland
CEO, Leanne Coddington, said feedback was that the
Cairns Convention Centre “over delivered on every aspect
of the event”.
Among the many association meetings held at the centre
in 2014 was the World Buiatarics Congress, considered
the `Vet Olympics’ of the world. The meeting attracted
more than 900 delegates with a number of international
pharmaceutical companies travelling to Australia to
participate. The congress allowed delegates to view first-
hand the beef and dairy industries of Tropical North
Queensland and highlighted Australia’s position as a world
leader in the breeding and management of beef and dairy
Another highlight was hosting the G20 Finance Ministers
and Central Bank Governors Meeting in October where
the eyes of the financial world were clearly on the city and
venue. More than 2000 delegates, media and security
descended on Cairns, with feedback on the seamless
delivery of the event described as outstanding.
Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey said: “Cairns was a
standout host city, delivering world-class service in a world
heritage environment with a friendly and engaged
