Long live print!
n the lead up to the 15 year anniversary of our magazine (in August this year) I recently took a look at our
first edition to see what we had been writing about and how much the magazine had changed.
In that first magazine we created something that we thought was pretty cool – a sealed section on our
website in which we asked some key people for their predictions on the future of the meetings industry.
Readers had to get the keyword from the magazine and then they could unlock the article online.
Unfortunately, in the many incarnations we’ve had of our website since, that story has now disappeared.
One thing I do remember is that I spoke to the futurist Richard Neville who said all those years ago that
bricks and mortar venues would find a new competitor in facilities that were not confined to the one place.
He didn’t say it then but that sounds a lot like what we call “Pop Up” venues today.
My point, however, isn’t his keen observations but the fact that what he said has now gone forever.
Up until recently I thought that that was simply the way of the new internet world and it was time for me to
move on. I was heartened, therefore, when I read that the vice president of Google, Dr Vinton Cerf, said in an
AAP article (Feb 16, 2015) that in centuries to come historians may look back on our time and know very
little about us because of the scarcity of written records.
In this piece he urges people to think about printing out their treasured photos and not rely on storing
them as memory files. And this is from a person who works for a company founded and operating online!
He says the problem is that new technology supersedes old technology and if the older technology is not
compatible to the new technology then whatever we have stored in those dusty archives may never be
The other thing is that like our early website, old files are not transferred to the new website or system
when we do an upgrade, and the information that we have is lost.
When I sent the story by Dr Cerf to a few friends, another associate posted an article written by a music
writer in the U.S. who was about to apply for a job and had to send samples of his work. The only problem
was that the various websites he had worked for over the past few years had all been purchased or
upgraded or shut down, and he actually had few examples that he had written any stories anywhere at all.
So what’s my point? While I think conference or exhibition apps and online blogs about the conference or
exhibition are important, nobody should forget the fact that one day they are very likely to disappear forever,
and with them the topics, the key points and facts of the event, and the keynote presentations will disappear
I would argue that that’s a problem one, two, six, 12 and 500 months from now. Great event but what the
hell was it all about? I got an email summary about it but that was 2000 emails ago and I really can’t
To that I say, long live print! For now and for the future.
