Adelaide’s hot... by the numbers
Over the 41 year history of Adelaide Convention Bureau it has secured $2 billion of business,
more than half of it since 2000. The past year alone has seen event bidding up 30 per cent with
138 events secured (13 international) attracting over 37,000 delegates requiring 133,654 bed
nights and, says CEO Damien Kitto, that translates to “$116.5 million of future business
generated at a return on investment on total budget of 58:1.”
Mr Kitto declared Adelaide “...a hot destination and our big increases in visitor numbers is
Plans to upsize Adelaide as a business event destination were laid in 2009 within the state’s
Tourism Plan, with “key triggers for growth” identified in a post-mining economy to lift tourism
revenue to $8 billion by 2020. Along the way it would add 10,000 jobs directly to the tourism
sector’s existing 23,000.
Critical to this planned growth was an unprecedented infrastructure investment, particularly
along North Terrace and the Torrens riverbank, to create a $3 billion convention hub anchored
by an enlarged Adelaide Convention Centre. It involved linking the convention centre to a
revitalised Adelaide Oval and Adelaide Festival Centre plus the biomedical hub further west
along North Terrace.
The $200 million SAHMRI, now open, is home to 450 research workers (with a maximum
capacity of 600); the $1.8 billion Royal Adelaide Hospital will open in 2016; A University of Adelaide
clinical school is also due in 2016 along with a University of South Australia Centre for Cancer
Biology. A new $600 million Women’s and Children’s Hospital is not due in this precinct until 2023.
Nearby in the CBD, the city also spent millions to revitalise its Victoria Square and Rundle Mall
Adelaide also moved to improve its accessibility by air and was the country’s fastest growing
airport in 2013/14 with increased flights by AirAsia X to Kuala Lumpur and more Cathay Pacific
connections to Hong Kong and Jetstar operating its first international flights from the city.
International passenger numbers were up 23 per cent and domestic up 3.5 per cent. Plans have
Delegates who took part in the Adelaide Health
and Medical Convenor’s Showcase recently
enjoyed some sumptuous canapés, great wine
and spectacular views in Adelaide Oval’s
inspiring Cathedral Room.
Adelaide Oval has enjoyed a proud history as
one of Australia’s premier sporting and
entertainment venues for more than 140 years.
In late 2009, the state government committed
$535 million to redevelop Adelaide Oval with the
view to delivering an internationally renowned,
world-class venue for the 21st century.
The opening of the redeveloped Adelaide Oval
has seen it once again sit proudly within a
revitalised riverbank and parklands precinct;
home to cricket, football and provides an
exceptional venue for a host of other major
sporting events and entertainment.
It now offers a variety of stunning spaces with
the capacity to host events in their thousands.
The Cathedral Room is a more intimate space,
suitable for events up to 350.
The Cathedral Room is located on level three of
the Eastern Stand and provides guests with a
premier view of one of Adelaide’s heritage
landmarks. The room is particularly suited to
formal dining settings and cocktail parties but is
an elegant choice for any event.
