to be more competitive on the global stage in
its bids to host large-scale business events.
“This is an exciting time for Auckland. We
are developing a new global brand identity
and story for Auckland which will illustrate
what makes our region unique, and we will
soon have a smart and innovative convention
centre that will complement this story and
support the future growth of the business
events sector for Auckland,” she said.
Not to be outdone, Wellington is also
planning to build a convention centre in
combination with a movie museum.
CINZ chief executive Sue Sullivan says
Wellington’s new convention centre will be an
enormous boost to New Zealand’s reputation.
A company formed by Wellington-based international filmmakers Sir Peter Jackson and Sir
Richard Taylor will run the museum which will feature many props from their considerable collections.
“We congratulate the visionaries behind this – Sir Peter Jackson, Sir Richard Taylor and
Wellington City Council - for recognising this opportunity and setting their sights on a stunning,
world-class facility,” Ms Sullivan said.
Plans for the building, opposite Te Papa Museum on the Wellington waterfront, will include a
convention centre with exhibition space and six meetings rooms capable of hosting 1100
people for full format conventions and 2250 theatre-style.
“Wellington is the geographical centre of New Zealand, and a hub for creativity, technological
expertise, culture and cuisine. It is the base for many associations, with a good range of
accommodation, easy access to government, and it’s walkable. This purpose-built convention
facility, configured to meet modern and future needs and expectations, promises huge benefits
for the city and the country,” she said.
With 19 properties in premium locations throughout the North and South Islands, Millennium
Hotels and Resorts offer excellent meeting options throughout New Zealand.
National director of sales, conference and incentives New Zealand and Australia, Alison Smith,
said “Our philosophy is all about making life easier for you, to help you think differently and add
value, anything else is just like everyone else – boring, vanilla and beige.”
Queenstown is already the flavour of the month for Millennium Hotels and Resorts in 2016
with some very prestigious conference events happening in their three hotels located in this
destination: Millennium Hotel Queenstown, Copthorne Hotel and Resort Queenstown, Lakefront
and Copthorne Hotel and Apartments Queenstown, Lakeview.
While all months in 2016 will be strong, there are some amazing conference opportunities in
July that are available to micenet readers; if you ever wanted to conference in the winter
wonderland of Queenstown during the peak ski season, now is the time to book it! For more
information on this exciting opportunity see the ad for Millennium Hotel Queenstown following.
Throughout the rest of the country Millennium Hotels and Resorts have a number of projects on
the go and at the top of list is the refurbishment of their most important Auckland hotel. The
activity on the Copthorne Hotel Auckland HarbourCity site, commanding a premium waterfront
location adjacent to the Viaduct Basin on Quay Street, has got the public talking. Without a
doubt, this is a major project for Millennium Hotel and Resorts and the end result will be a dynamic
new product that will be sought after in the marketplace. The quiet kid is always cool when you
get to know them... watch this space over the coming months as the project takes shape.
Millennium Hotels and Resorts have also ticked off the completed refurbishment of the
Millennium Hotel Rotorua. The sheer delight from conference delegates has been overwhelming,
general manager, Pipiana Whiston says.
“We have the product, we have the best location close to the Rotorua Events Centre and we
would love to see you here,” she said.
And while Rotorua may have lost the direct flight from Sydney, this is not seen as a
disadvantage. The compact size of New Zealand and the ease of access to all regional ports
means delegates are enjoying the wider countryside and not just in and out of airports.
In 2016, Millennium Hotels and Resorts have seen a real emphasis on both national and
international events looking at regional conferencing and not just main city events. Their national
help lines in both Australia and New Zealand make it easy to conference throughout New
Zealand – another reason why Millennium Hotels and Resorts is an incredibly affordable and
Hot demand for Heritage
Heritage Hotels in New Zealand are in hot demand for exclusive hire by conference groups, with
a doubling of business inquiries in recent months.
Group conference and incentive sales manager, Shelley Eastwood, says Heritage Hotels is
charting a big increase in conference groups wanting extra privacy and exclusivity for their delegates.
The finale of the TV hit, The Bachelorette, was
filmed in Rotorua in 2015. Now the aim is for
more meetings business from Australia.
