Will the isolationists please stand up!
he Meetings & Events Australia annual conference in Melbourne in April was, in my view, one of
the strongest in terms of content that I can recall.
It was also one of the most disappointing because of who was absent.
In an industry that promotes and pushes group activity – conferences in particular – as a
legitimate means of doing better business, why are some in our sector shunning their local association?
Any industry association is of paramount importance to its industry. They should broaden knowledge
among members and foster a network of like-minded individuals who can work together to improve their
business practices and generally help the sector grow and develop.
Well-run conferences, like MEA 2016, open attendees up to new thinking, new products and new ideas –
many that they can take back to their own businesses and adapt.
Not only is it the conference content, but it’s the people that you meet. This is no more the case with
medical conferences where real connections are made and new – often global - partnerships are formed.
Business, some wise man or woman once said, does not exist in a vacuum. Another said: business does
not function well in isolation.
At our very own Meeting On The Green golf day in April it was comforting to see the Oneill Photographics
team on hand to capture the event. The following week at the LNG18 conference in Perth they were there
again, hired by the PCO Arinex to record this mega-meeting. And then, later that week, at the MEA
conference, there they were once more.
Oneill is just one company that is a member of MEA and that many in the industry use.
If you were new to the industry or you kept yourself and your staff in a bubble then you may not know
about them. So what would you do if one of your clients asked you for a recommendation on a
photographer who knew how to capture good event photographs? Would you take a wild guess?
You build relationships with people in the industry at conferences like MEA and you have those
connections who you can trust.
What if your client or one of your prospects asks you to recommend a four-star hotel in Perth? Or an
exhibition company in Adelaide? Or a restaurant in Brisbane? Or an AV company on the Gold Coast? Or an
event producer in Sydney? Or a transport company in Tasmania? Or a CSR activity they could do in the NT?
Are you going to stay sitting at your desk and put the request to your LinkedIn network? Perhaps that’ll
work if half the group doesn’t try to sell you something.
I’d suggest that since you’re working in the business events industry – an industry that you promote and
that you wish to grow – perhaps it’s time to get amongst it at your industry’s national conference and the
many networking events that are held throughout the year.
You may discover a vital new contact that you can use in the future. You may even make a friend or two.
And you might even learn something! m
