I found my way into the business event industry after I finished a Diploma of Spa Resort
Management in Melbourne 10 years ago. I moved to Port Douglas to be a Spa Therapist at
Silky Oaks Lodge. For three years I worked across food & beverage, front office and events.
Since then I’ve worked in various hotels in the region and worked my way from events
coordinator to conference & events sales manager. After 10 years I made the step out of hotels into
the world of tourism and have been at Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef for 18 months.
My team are incredibly supportive and knowledgeable. I have learnt so much in this role and I
love what we stand for - to market and promote this destination for business events which in
turn benefits the economy.
My day involves responding to leads and referrals from business events trade across Australia
and New Zealand. I spend a lot of time engaging with our members and ensuring they are
aware of our operations and how we can help. My job involves a broad range of activities; no
day is ever the same.
Thanks to support and collaboration from my colleagues earlier this year I was fortunate enough
to win the DMAI Convention Scholarship. Each year the AACB, DMAI & Qantas offer a scholarship
for one representative from an Australian convention bureau to attend the DMAI Annual
Convention in America. The prize is designed to encourage career development of junior bureau
staff. I created a video that answered three questions on our destination. The video was judged on
content and delivery, professionalism, destination voice, creativity and industry insight.
The knowledge and insight I gained from attending the convention was invaluable.
I feel incredibly privileged to have gained experience across hotels and tourism in this part of
the world. I’m so glad I spend every day living and breathing such a diverse, exciting and
My first experiences in the events industry came while in high school where I was responsible for
technical services for both internal and external events, both theatre and corporate. I was
approached by the managing director of Novatech who contracted me while finishing year 12. I
started a business degree but after a year this was put on the backburner to focus on my career.
Over the next six years I worked closely with Novatech in several different roles. Starting out
on the tools, I was able to work on many types of events and began to specialise in custom
solutions for business events. I also managed a portfolio of venues, helping to grow this to over
two dozen in two years before transitioning into a more focused role.
Although AV is a passion, my primary focus is information technology. Since 2010 I have
been working primarily to design and manage systems for events and the companies that
support them. As my position shifted to IT I specialised in business intelligence, knowledge
management, and business process management utilising ERP as a primary tool.
One of my highest achievements was designing and managing a new business unit for
Novatech called OneSystem, a platform designed for managing conferences up to 30
concurrent rooms. OneSystem has travelled throughout the Asia Pacific region, managing
leading surgical conferences. During this time I won the MEA Young Achievers Award.
In May 2015 I took a 15 month sabbatical to care for an unwell family member in the US.
While overseas I became Six Sigma Black Belt certified, obtained a Diploma of Business and
Management, and founded my current venture Doogie Consulting.
Doogie Consulting provides completely managed IT infrastructure for corporate events and
conferences and the onsite management of technology systems for clients including Kojo
Events and BHP Billiton. I also provide deployment and management of leading ERP platforms
and migration services between platforms in amongst other projects throughout the country. m
