We caught a ferry to Vernazza, a small fishing village, and one of the most characteristic and
beautiful villages of the Cinque Terre. The tiny port is surrounded by tall pastel-coloured
buildings with blue ocean on one side and a rocky coastline of steeply-terraced olive groves on
the other. These olive groves apparently produce some of the finest olive oil in the country.
Walking up from the quaint village square, we joined the many hikers walking the trail, most of
who had walked its entirety over a number of days, stopping and staying overnight in each
village along the way. Many hikers on the trail commented that Vernazza was the most beautiful
village on the trail and dubbed their favourite. Trust SeaDream to suss out the best of the best!
We met some wonderful people on SeaDream II, in particular an English couple whose first
sailing, recommended by a friend of theirs, was in 2008.
“After I sold my yacht in the Mediterranean, feeling a bit spare and not interested in hotel
holidays and especially going on cruises with thousands of grockles, we were persuaded to join
friends on SeaDream II, [travelling from] Nice to Nice. It was extraordinary; the nearest
experience to having your own crewed yacht,” they told me.
“There have never been more than 100 guests on board, we have never been in a queue,
never waited for a tender to take us ashore; there is always a table available of our choosing in
the restaurant, and there is always excellent cabin service. I could go on and on. From then on,
sailing on SeaDream’s yachts were the only cruises we have been on and probably ever will. We
have so far clocked up 62 days including two transatlantic crossings. [It is] Always great fun
meeting different people from other countries including Australians!
“The most memorable times on these cruises was when, in the Mediterranean, steaming north
from Sicily, we stopped at 11pm off the Island of Stromboli where we witnessed an eruption from
the volcano. On hearing a tremendous belch it blew flames and ash high in the sky and we saw
molten lava flowing down to the sea. Better than any firework display in all my years!
“Another very memorable time was crossing the Atlantic in 2013 with only 36 guests when
we were asked if we would like to go for a swim. To our amazement it was not a joke. The boat
stopped and all but two jumped over the side. [It was] A surreal experience.
“As far as memorable ports are concerned we enjoyed going ashore but hardly go on any
organised excursions, just an early walk in the morning on our own and back for lunch (not your
