Convention Centre News
The Darwin Convention Centre enjoyed an
excellent year in 2016, hosting more than
12,000 international and national delegates
as well as 70,000 guests for other events
held at the venue. The centre is expecting to
see even bigger numbers in 2017.
Exciting enhancements undertaken at the
1200-seat centre have included the creation
of an ‘NT Top-End Produce’ menu, as well as
an upgrade to the external LED lighting
system, which allows any colour combination
to be projected onto the outside of the
building. A brand overhaul has also been
undertaken, giving a fresh, new look to the
Centre’s marketing face.
While the centre’s emphasis has primarily
been on winning domestic association
conferences, the attraction of more South
East Asian business will be a focus for 2017.
Darwin presents an appealing strategic
location for associations who wish to attract
both domestic and South East Asian market
delegates, with close proximity and direct
aviation access on offer for both markets.
A new $250 million luxury hotel is to be built
on the Darwin Waterfront, with construction
commencing in 2017 and due for completion
by 2020. The development will occupy a 2.9
hectare waterfront site adjacent to Darwin’s
hugely popular Waterfront Precinct and will
mark the debut of the Starwood Hotels &
Resorts’ Westin brand in Darwin.
A new international lounge has recently opened at Darwin International Airport to address the
premium expectations of international travellers visiting the Northern Territory. The CATALINA
Lounge is not aligned with any specific aviation carrier or class of travel and caters for the needs
of all travellers, including those attending business events. Access to the lounge is available
upon payment of a one-off fee, with packages also on offer. The lounge can host up to 70
guests and is fully catered and licensed with premium facilities and modern technology. In off-
peak times, the lounge can be hired as a venue for small business gatherings and functions.
Outback Floatplane Adventures is one of the most exciting and unique group activity and
touring options to be offered out of Darwin. It packages up a floatplane, airboat and helicopter
excursion experience and is a perfect fit for incentive groups. Departing from Darwin Airport, the
floatplane makes the short flight to Sweets Lagoon where it lands amongst the mangroves. The
next stage of the adventure involves a swift airboat cruise through the rainforest channels to
catch a glimpse of the native wildlife, including the ever-present resident crocodiles. Then it’s up
in the air again, this time for a helicopter flight over the Top End region’s stunning landscape.
Lunch is provided on a ‘Billabong Cruise’ on the lagoon, where participants can try their luck at
catching one of the Territory’s world famous NT barramundi fish.
Outback Floatplane Adventures has recently undertaken an exciting new venture and will be
opening a boutique resort near the Finniss River, just a 20 minute flight from Darwin, where
guests can retire after an exciting day of adventure on Sweets Lagoon. The property boasts a
moat waterway shaped like a map of Australia, which will be home to some of the NT’s famous
saltwater crocs, with guests able to directly view the crocs from their lodge accommodation. m
