lobal Exhibitions Day (#GED17)
is an initiative of UFI, the global
association for the exhibition
industry and the International
Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE).
Established to highlight and celebrate the
contribution of exhibitions to diverse sectors
of the economy, business growth and
national prosperity, Global Exhibitions Day is
a series of events, activities and personal
contributions from all over the world that
together will give the global industry a united
voice to promote the Power of Exhibitions.
Global Exhibition Day key messages include:
• Exhibitions are the most effective
marketing channel, especially for small and
• Exhibitions stimulate innovation and
• Exhibitions support the development of
trade and the internationalisation of business
• Exhibitions support economic growth and
generate significant social and economic
• Exhibitions provide a face-to-face medium
to build relationships and do business
Advocacy for our sector is a collective
responsibility and there is more impact if we
all join in the global effort.
This year, EEAA targeted 75 local, state
and federal politicians, business leaders and
industry stakeholders around the country to
put a spotlight on the value of exhibitions and
events to broad sectors of Australia’s
economy and business life. We also launched
a social media campaign that encouraged
our industry’s individuals, teams and companies to join the campaign and amplify Australia’s
voice on the global stage.
Each year, the EEAA leadership community comes together to discuss and debate the most
pressing challenges facing the industry. For the second year, the EEAA has aligned its major and
important annual member events with the broader global movement to signal the importance of
this initiative to our industry.
Over the 7th and 8th of June, the EEAA held its Annual General Meeting and Leaders Forum
and a new Global Exhibitions Day Reception in Sydney, which was attended by federal and
state government representatives, Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, the
Honourable Keith Pitt MP and Mr Jonathan O’Dea, NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the
Premier and Treasurer.
We were also very pleased to have negotiated a partnership with Mumbrella that recognises
exhibitions and events as powerful and effective marketing channels. This included stage
presence at their Mumbrella360 Conference on Global Exhibitions Day.
One of the EEAA’s strategic priorities is to advocate the strengths of live events and to
encourage those who influence marketing spend to invest more in events. This is a major focus
for the association. We are focussing more of our work on reaching out to the marketing
community to show how effective our channel is in achieving marketing outcomes.
Promoting exhibitions as an effective marketing channel is also one of UFI’s key messages for
Global Exhibitions Day. It was a fortunate coincidence that Mumbrella360 – Australia’s biggest
media and marketing conference – was held on June 7. It provided us with yet another
opportunity to amplify the voice of our sector to a broader audience on this day.
The agreement also includes the introduction of a new award – The Best Use of Face-to-
Face/Interaction Marketing Through Events – at the 2017 Mumbrella Awards, to be held on
We are pleased to be working with Mumbrella, a company which has derived so much
success from its events and conferences. After creating an online community in the marketing
industry, Mumbrella turned to live events as a way of consolidating its huge following.
We look forward to working with them to help raise the profile of events and exhibitions and
their value to the marketing community.
While there is value in taking one day to collectively celebrate the industry that we love,
advocating for our sector is not something we do once a year. It’s something we do every day.
You can find out all about why we think Global Exhibitions Day is an important day for our
industry and what we did to celebrate #GED17 on our website. m
