eld during the international AIPPI
2017 conference – an
association of intellectual
property practitioners, it caused
Business Events Sydney GM bidding Kristian
Nicols, speaking during the event organisers
network evening to ponder, “No client would
host their own partners networking event
during a conference and the next morning host
another professional development session for
Meetings & Events Australia, as Arinex did.
And all during two weeks of legal events in the
city, 4500 barristers and solicitors from the
National Bar Association over this weekend
and more than 2000 from the AIPPI.”
Enhancing the process of planning an event,
the visitors enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour
of this significant congress with 1500 delegates
from 83 countries, involving 27 staff, 17
volunteers and 76 speakers and moderators.
Just one in a number of events Arinex was
organising and also one they had been
working on for three years, and as Arinex
founder and chair Ros McLeod said, “This
meeting is more contained that what we
usually work on but also the most complex
with 135 different registrations, and as you
can imagine with patent attorneys timing is everything, so timing at meals was strictly adhered to.”
Also speaking at the organiser’s network, Damon Henshaw, chair of organising committee for
AIPPI 2017, described the group as a fairly conservative legal organisation of intellectual
property practitioners with a mandate to make comparative reports and to come to resolutions
that will help harmonise laws all around the world to make it better for everyone.
“We did have an international rotation for our congress every third year, then in 2005 we
introduced a forum that it was every other year.
“The conference hasn’t been in Australia since it was held in Melbourne in 2001. It was at the
Helsinki forum we were successful in getting this conference up.
“One of the objectives beside our academic one was to bring people to a host city and use
that opportunity to build and solidify networks and generate new relationships. In addition to
also helping to build our own membership within Australia. We ended up with a 100 percent
increase in our membership,” he marvelled.
When it came to venue selection Mr Henshaw was quick to remark, “To be honest there
wasn’t any other option. We needed something that was state-of-the-art, very international,
close to the CBD and close to all available hotels. It turned out to be magnificent – with all the
delegates reported to be enjoying their experiences.
“It became obvious that the selection of the PCO was not an option. “We did put it out to
bids but Arinex was the clear winner. Their depth and breadth, capacity, skills and abilities made
them the obvious choice. They went through a whole analysis of how previous conferences
worked, provided us with detailed reports and also helped us enormously to promote Sydney
2017,” he affirmed.
ICC Sydney general manager Adam Mather-Brown explaining some of the “joys” they went
through prior to the congress was that while the venue was on the radar, the entire event had
been modelled on the old venue.
“One of the great strategies was to bring in particular people from the old venue to join us – a
win, win solution,” he said. m
They are known as the architects of inspiring experiences and in October
Arinex, together with the ICC Sydney and Business Events Sydney,
invited a group of conference and event organisers and Meetings & Events
Australia to experience a congress in action.
