o 2017 is finally over and we
have all taken a massive breath
and hopefully had a bit of time off
to recharge and relax... yeah
right! We work in events. Most of us can’t
even spell “relax” let alone do it!
Hands up if you managed to keep to the
diet and not drink too much over the holiday
season? Yep... not a hand in sight!
The ball is about to start rolling again, so
you need to be ready to hop on and enjoy, or
at least keep your balance for the ride.
So here are my 10 top tips for getting
ready for 2018, not in any particular order:
Is the company website updated with the
latest contact details, photos and events?
Keeping it current is the best way forward and
ensuring that SEO’s are maximised for the
new year. Make sure there is a call to action.
2 Social Media
Is your social media ready to go? A good
way to get this going for 2018 is to have
10-20 images and posts ready to start drip
feeding via Facebook, Instagram and
LinkedIn so momentum builds from the start.
Yes, I know this is cheesy, but also true.
Setting my goals gives me a concrete
something to aim for. You will be surprised
how these goals will materialise by the end of
the year. It only takes five minutes and does
not have to be soul searching. They can be
as simple as making $X or “doing a road
show”. Once these points are there, it’s
amazing how we work towards them.
With the new year upon us what’s your plan
to make it the best one ever? asks Stu Katzen.
One of my things is to go and buy an outfit/item for the new year. It doesn’t have to be a $2000
suit. Just something that is new, that heralds in the new year. This really works and makes you
feel like you are ready to start fresh.
Clean/clear the desk and office. Make sure you start the year with everything cleared and
organised. A clean slate. This is something that is high on the procrastination list, but once
done, you feel cleansed and so pure (then have a drink to celebrate).
6 Your Team and your Business
Sit down with your team (that’s right – schedule it) and discuss what you want from them and
the business this year. Set your targets with them and what you want them to focus on for the
year. So often we think that our staff “must know” what we are doing and where we are heading
and how to get there. “Isn’t that what we are paying them for?” Redefine and possibly reset this
with them. Give them a buy in to the decision-making process. Make it personal to them.
Put together a list of clients you want to target. Who, where and why.
“Who” are they, what do they do?
“Where” are they? No point going after a client in another state if you don’t have access there.
“Why” is the most important. Why do you want them as a client?
Work out how and when you will contact them.
Look at your current client list and work out who is using you and if you need to let some

Reach out to existing suppliers and reaffirm their importance for your business and that you
intend to use them. Small, but really important. Go through your suppliers and identify where
there are weaknesses and then go and source possible alternatives.
Evaluate your business honestly. Are there processes that don’t work or need tweaking? If they
are not working, assess why and what you can do to fix them. Do you need that process, or is
there a process you currently don’t have, but do need?
The years seem to scream by at the speed of light. But doing a few smart and simple things
at the start may make a huge difference to you, your business, your momentum forward and
most importantly your time and sanity down the track. Good luck with everything for 2018. m
