Twenty years ago, in January 1998, Bob
Carr - then Premier of NSW - handed
over the keys and the Royal Agricultural
Society of NSW (RAS) took possession
of the brand new Sydney Showground,
moving from Moore Park to a new home
in the geographic heart of Sydney at
Sydney Olympic Park.
Following more than 100 years in
residence at Moore Park, the entire
Sydney Showground operation relocated
to its purpose-built venue, part of the
redevelopment of the area for the Sydney
2000 Olympics and beyond. Becoming a
‘chief tenant’ of the Sydney Olympic Park
Authority’s (SOPA) major sporting and
event precinct, Sydney Showground took
charge of 22 brand-new exhibition and
event spaces across 30 hectares.
All eyes were on the venue when the first event, the AGHA Sydney Gift Fair opened
its doors in February, 1998. Fast forward to February 2018 and the same event will
celebrate 20 years at Sydney Showground, a testament to the success of the Sydney
Showground venue and team.

a successful enterprise, hosting some of the largest events held across Sydney and

As a world class facility, the venue also attracts international interest, with X Games
from the US and the Sydney Irish Festival - featuring the national sport of Hurling -
booking the venue for events in 2018. With one of the largest banquet seating spaces in
Australia, the Dome is able to host international groups including Jeunesse and Maruti
Suzuki requiring seating for 4000 within 25 minutes of the CBD.
What makes Sydney Showground particularly unique is the close working partnerships
that have been forged with Sydney Royal award-winning producers in regional Australia.
This has enabled the Chefs and catering team at Sydney Showground to incorporate the
‘best of the best’ produce to deliver unsurpassed event experiences for customers –
again evidenced by the numerous industry awards the team have received during the
last 20 years.
In 2017, three sporting codes including AFL, T20 Cricket and Football call Sydney
Showground’s boutique 24,000 seat Spotless stadium home, a stadium which was voted
independently as the top national venue for fan experience by AFL fans in 2015 and 2016.
The future looks bright as the NSW Government looks to the West for the development
of cultural and recreation facilities in the nation’s fastest population growth area. The
Sydney Olympic Park Authority and the RAS’s masterplan for the precinct and venue
is taking shape with growth forecasts seeing up to 23,500 residents, 34,000 jobs and
100,000m2 of retail space in the precinct by 2030.
