a wee lad living in the outer
suburbs of Brisbane I
remember on the odd
occasion that my family and I would head to
“the big smoke” there was a river that we
didn’t take much notice of.
Nobody did in fact. The Brisbane River, all
brown and muddy, was never a feature of
How things change. Today, it’s the thriving
artery of the CBD. CityCats duck and weave
from one side to the other, dropping off
commuters and visitors, restaurants and
hotels are perched on its edge, and pleasure
cruisers take evening clients on a slow jaunt
up-river on cocktail cruises.
Little wonder then that there’s plenty of
anticipation for the opening of Howard Smith
Wharves. The venue, located right on the
river near the Story Bridge, has already
played host to a number of events.
That looks set to rise from next month with
the opening of Howard’s Hall.
Designed by award-winning architecture
and interiors studio Woods Bagot, the vast,
1100 square metres of event space will be
privy to uninterrupted riverfront views spanning
the iconic Story Bridge and city skyline.
Less than 10 per cent of the buildings at
Howard Smith Wharves are new. The majority
are carefully repurposed heritage spaces.
To fit seamlessly into the broader precinct,
and respect the site’s weighty history, the
new buildings—which include Howard’s Hall
– will tap into the industrial language of their neighbours.
One of the most exciting spaces will be the Overwater Bar. Piles have been driven into the
water under the Story Bridge to create a platform for this special space which is expected to be
open later this year.
In other news, the onsite hotel has moved beyond the sixth level, and the Rivershed event
space is reportedly on track.
The management team is taking bookings from November this year for its two indoor
Opening this month (October) is the onsite brewery Felons Brewing Co. Felons Brewing Co is
a modern day brewery that will be located alongside other riverfront dining establishments.

Venues located by the water continue to provide that extra
