and beverage, and entertainment, etcetera, will likely come in less than at home. The
upside is even if you are spending the same, you will likely be offering a memorable
experience or enhancing the program from the norm. Visiting neighbouring regions of the
South Pacific and South East Asia are no brainers for cost savings yet even programs sent
to the US and Europe can be on par with what you’d expect to spend at home.
2 Increased engagement – When attendees are ‘on tour’ abroad they tend to relax more.
While they are still there for business, the allure of a foreign destination abroad puts them
into holiday mode and you will notice increased engagement in your business sessions
bearing in mind that there are no kids to pick up from school, a parking meter to feed and
nowhere else to be at the end of the day.
3 A chance to give back – Corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs are still popular for
corporates holding their events abroad. Many destination local ground operators can
curate CSR programs which give back to the local communities in need and in turn offer
benefits to the locals. Attendees also gain a highly memorable experience and a sense of
achievement that permeates through the whole company.
4 Increase company culture by employees sharing experiences together – Taking your event
abroad takes your attendees out of their usual environment into a foreign one. This sense
of occasion is a memorable one and forms a stronger company culture, one they have
shared as a group and that creates a story in the event’s history.
5 Increased attendance – For events that have a commitment fee to attend, I have found that
desirable offshore destinations yield a far better attendance than a domestic event.
Attendees get excited about offshore destinations and events with the view they will
experience the destination’s culture, cuisine and locale while taking in the business
sessions (and bar tab). If the organiser markets this to their network properly, attendees will
see the value between connecting an offshore experience (and potentially tack on a long
weekend to extend their stay) and potential tax benefits.
1 Create excitement and anticipation around an event – A change-up from a domestic to an
overseas destination can be just the thing to stimulate increased delegate registrations and
participation, especially when there are opportunities to undertake pre and post touring or
extended stays. The ‘wow factor’ of an overseas destination cannot be under-estimated.
2 New international connections – A well-chosen overseas location can provide an
opportunity for delegates to network and develop new and invaluable international
business, professional and personal connections.
3 Enhance conference or meeting program content – An overseas location enables the
inclusion of fascinating but previously-unknown speakers from the host destination, scope
for local community interaction and delegate engagement in CSR activities, options for
technical off-site touring and the addition of unique local cultural learnings in the program.
All can lead to achieving the optimum business event outcomes.
4 Affordable and competitive range of options – Offshore has never been more affordable
with cheaper than ever airfares and many “new” business event destinations such as
Vietnam, Cambodia and Sri Lanka entering the business event marketplace. These new
players and the more firmly established value-for-money international destinations,
especially in the Asia-Pacific are keen to attract new business. Attractive value-adds and
support funding on offer have made international destinations a very realistic option for
5 Make your event more internationally accessible – A strategically-located overseas
destination may increase the opportunity for international participation at your event,
making it more accessible than when held in Australia. Engaging with their international
peers enables delegates to learn valuable lessons about doing business in a global
